With Saturday the 14th of February being Valentines Day one would think that it would be a good reason to stay home in the warmth particularly on a wet, cold and blustery day such as we had. But no…. a dedicated bunch of diehards braved the Scottish-like conditions and forged ahead onto the Stanthorpe Golf course playing in a Single Stroke event. The event was generously sponsored by long time members Matt and Nikki Waterworth, and we thank them for their sponsorship. The me

On a beautiful highland day, a good field of Golfers assembled ... ‘So, all the cracks (golfers) had gathered to the fray.’ (Banjo Patterson). The day was sponsored by our very own and loved Wesley Smith. Some golfers were hoping that the first prize would be a beautiful new house – dream on. Congratulations to the Lady winners on the Wes Smith Building, stroke and monthly medal competition: Helen Jones, Loraine Evans on a count back from Lynette Ludlow. Pin Shots went to Lyn

A big field of golfers set out to compete in the David Townsend Memorial 4BBB event on Saturday the 31st of January in fine but hot conditions. The course is in great condition considering how dry it has been lately with some visitors commenting how excellent the greens are. The event was generously sponsored by club member Max Hunter who described David as a long-term member and a “gentleman” golfer who is missed around the course. Australia Day 2026
A big field of around 60 enthusiastic golfers teed off in the annual Australia Day 2 ball ambrose. Thanks to John Bylicki of Go Vita for his generous sponsorship. The day was fine but extremely hot and I am sure it was not just this writer who was glad the game was 9 holes and not 18. The game is played over 9 holes as this allows players to attend other Australia Day events if they want to. This year the game and annual trophy was won by the father and son team of Michael Th

The Ladies pin shots went to Lynette Ludlow (x2) Deb Joyce and Trish Fittock. Congratulations to t

On a fine summer’s day, a good field of ‘wannabe’ golfers lined up for a combined Irish Stableford sponsored by Jason Lawer and Jack Parker. Thank you, Jason, and Jack. The idea is that teams of two multiply their Stableford points for each hole. If both players have, say, two points each, then they record a score of four. However, if one player has a ‘wash,’ meaning zero points, and say the other player has a good result of say four points, then the combined, multiplied resu

A splendid day was on hand for the final round of the Foundation Cup at the Stanthorpe Golf Club. This is a stroke competition played over two weeks. Congratulations to Jack Parker who gets his name on the trophy. Jack had a nett score over the two weeks of 140 and commiserations to Gary Kirby who had the same score but, on a count, back of the last 9 holes came runner up. Well, done to Lisa Stuart who won the Ladies Foundation Cup on 149 nett over the two weeks. The Day’s Pl

The course is starting to show the effects of the dry weather with some dry areas on the fairways but overall is still in very good condition and this showed in the scoring which was equally good. Well, it’s that time of the year again when things get a little crazy and out on the Stanthorpe golf course it’s no different. Thanks to our generous sponsors, Brendon Barker, Jason Bacon and Nigel Eldridge 56 golfers were subjected to golf with a twist. Playing a 2 ball Ambrose on the front nine and an alternate shot on the back nine was interesting enough but then we had to putt around obstacles on the green, hit onto a green with 2 pins, one with no pin and one with the pi

More mature Golfers will remember the song by Brook Benton, ‘A Rainy Night in Georgia’, well it was a rainy night in Stanthorpe right through to the morning. The early starters were blessed with playing in heavy, soaking rain. The more enlightened Golfers who started at a civilised hour were blessed with sunshine and refreshing breezes. ‘Such is the Life of the Everyday … Golfer’ (song by Glen Campbell). What an extraordinary day’s play was held at Stanthorpe on Saturday; wind, rain – perfect! Thunder … hmm. Lightening? And we headed for the Club house. The Vice Captain had to make a painful call and the day’s play was abandoned but fortunately we had all passed the halfway mark and so could still have a Nine-hole competition. Saturday was one of the standout days in the SGC calendar as it was the famous M & D Auto Day. Mick and Judy Spiller make it such a fun day for everyon

Oh dear … the Captain, My Captain, is away for a few weeks and writing this blog column has fallen to me, the Vice Captain. Vice by name and vice by nature. I think we shall begin with reference to that Western culture forming literature of ‘Peanuts’ and Snoopy trying to begin his story: ‘It was a dark and stormy night. Suddenly a [golf] shot rang out. A golf buggy appeared on the horizon.’ Well, we can say that it was dark and stormy weather on the day (see photo). However,
