Stanthorpe golfers played a stroke event on Saturday 16 March, the day sponsored by Stephen and Sandy Kay and the club thanks them for the day. In conjunction was the second of three rounds for the Pike Trophies, men and ladies.

The men’s event saw Darrell Boekholt back in the winners chair after he returned a good score of nett 69, just ahead of the field. Runner up went to John Green on nett 70. He reported that he had some very good one putt holes which helped the low score. Featuring in the top scores for the day were Eric Ree on nett 71 and Brendon Barker on nett 73.

The ladies stoke event was won by Nikki Waterworth who was well clear of the field with nett 73. Appreciation to Lorraine Gurnett for presenting the ladies’ prizes on behalf of the sponsors. Next best was from Lorraine Evans, a few strokes back on nett 77 after a count back. Neta Thouard on nett 77 and Lyn Ludlow on nett 80 featured in the run down.

Men’s pin shots were spread around the field with Len Leigh closest at 3, Darrell Boekholt closest at 12 and Ivan Juriss nearest at 17. Pro-pins went to Adam Hamish at 1/10, Matt Burgess at 5/14 and Scott Constable at 9/18.

Linda Kelly collected the ladies’ pin at 2/11. The remaining pin at 7/16 and both NTP’s at 12 and 17 went to the ladies’ winner, Nikki Waterworth.

With two of the three rounds for the Pike Trophy now complete, the possible winners are slowly emerging. History has shown it is best to have the score on the board rather than rely on the next round. For the men, Scott Constable and Eric Ree are leading the way and there another six contenders in close pursuit. The last round could be very important to a number of players. The ladies’ Trophy at this stage is being lead by Nikki Waterworth and it will take a great effort from the field to catch her.

All of that will be decided in next Saturday’s stroke event. So Saturday 23 March is another stroke event and the sponsor for the day is Mark McCosker. Usually, the Nuffield Cup is also up for grabs on Mark’s sponsored day.

An extra piece of news concerns the 300 club, an in house raffle for members. Believe the lucky winners were a group of gentlemen, Bryant, Maugeri and Simmers, and the crowd in attendance were very pleased with their win.

Stanthorpe Sporters golfers

A change to the usual Sunday morning golf game for Stanthorpe Sporters golfers, Sunday 17 March was the Maureen Bates Memorial Day, a two person ambrose event played over 9 holes.

This event has been played for quite a few years now and usually draws a good field. The day is sponsored by Rex Bates and we thank Rex and his family members for the day.

Final results were very close this year, with only fractions separating the field. Lucky winners were the Jones’, Keith and Helen. Understand that Keith did most of the hitting but Helen provided the direction.

Very close and only a half shot behind was the team of Rod Paye and Mark Richards. Both teams scored 38 for the nine holes and only a slightly better handicap allowance made the difference in the end.

After the mornings play was over, players enjoyed a sausage sizzle and looked forward to the raffle on the day. Thanks to Rex and helpers for manning the BBQ and providing the eats that went down very quickly, as did the snacks put on just before the presentation.

The usual custom is that Rex provides a number of prizes for a raffle which is popular with the players. This year, the golf club also put up a few prizes for the raffle and we thank them for that. Some very happy faces at the end for those who won a prize, particularly from Brendon Barker who collected the main prize in the raffle.

Next Sunday, Sporters return to their normal Sunday program and will be playing a nine hole stroke event. All golfers and non-golfers are invited to come along and participate, arrive around 7.30 am for an 8.00 am hit off.
