The Green Keeper’s Revenge. A very demanding competition was played at the Stanthorpe Golf Club on Saturday. The ‘green’ on the 7th / 16th was both fast and furious. If the chip or putt was not absolutely correct in line and length … then … it was ‘good night, Irene’ … and off the green the ball would slide. And so, it is rightly called, ‘The Green Keeper’s Revenge.’ It was our own dearly beloved Green Keeper, Bill Pyne, who set up the course beautifully AND sponsored the day’s golf. We are indebted to Bill for the superb condition of the greens and course AND for sponsoring the day. He did however give us a significant challenge on the 7/16th green which I’m sure is his way of keeping us honest (and humble) in the chipping and putting departments.
The crisp weather meant that some regular players had other ‘commitments’ on the day but those who braved the conditions were well rewarded with a bracing days golf and the winners, thanks to Bill Payne, were very generously rewarded. Congratulations to the Ladies; Loraine Evans on a count back with Nikki Waterworth and third place to Linda Kelly. Ladies pin shots went to hawk eye Nikki Waterworth for the 2/11, 12 and 17th and Loraine Evans for the dreaded 7/16th.
Congratulations to the Men’s winners, first to Zac Hendry and on a count back, second place to AJ Grasso and third to Eric Ree. Eric wisely left his three wood at home and has become the 5-iron specialist. The countdown went to Brendan McMillan and Keith Allen. Pin Shots; 3rd Matt Penn, 12th Angleo Maugeri, 1/10th Rod Paye, 5/14th Richard Reardon and 9/18th Clayton Frank.
At the presentation we took the time to cover some other Stanthorpe golf news. Luke Reardon, caddy to Jason Day, is off to compete with Jason at the Paris Olympic Games. That makes two Stanthorpians at the Olympics. The next big news was via the proud father of Hannah Reeves (photo), Rob Reeves. Hannah is currently in the USA playing a number of amateur championships and overnight came second in the Women’s Western Amateur Championships in Illinois. The club is so happy for Hannah and so proud of her achievements.
Next Saturday, 20 July will be a single stroke event (scary) sponsored by Reece Plumbing with thanks to Tom Fittock for coordinating the event.
