Stanthorpe golfers played their monthly medal and putting competition for July on Saturday 8. In addition, play also was for the Dale Mullins Memorial Trophy, this event again sponsored by Michael Thompson. The medal event sponsor was Michael O’Brien and we thank both Michael’s for again putting on the day.

The Dale Mullins trophy winner went to the player with the lowest gross score on the day, for the men. Nathan Stibbard recorded a round of 73 to take the title. Also in the 70’s was Scott Constable and his 78 took runner up. The ladies’ best gross went to Lisa Stuart with 91 for the round and runner up was Mei Bell on 103.

Sponsor Michael Thompson also sponsored an approach prize on each of the holes. Hamish Adam managed to collect 3 approaches, one of which was the birdies’ nest, Jarrod Irwin and Mat Penn both claimed 2 each with another six going to individual players.

Along with claiming approaches, Hamish Adam also collected the medal event having a very good round of nett 69, three under par for his round. Hamish parred the front nine but had two minor errors on the back nine, but still a good round which will see his handicap lower. After sifting through the rest of the scores, runner up went to Lyle Bryant with nett 70 on the day. This score could have been a bit better except for the water hole at the 16th hole, his ball got a bit wet.

The ladies medal day was won by Filomena Silver with an impressive score of nett 65. Still a novice at the game, Filomena’s scores have been steadily improving and good to see the handicap shrinking. Runner up was Helen Jones on nett 72.

Putting awards for the men went to Ron Batterham, the practice starting to pay off. Only 26 putts for the round, a good effort, one putting or two putting all but two holes. Last hole resulted in an out of the way three putt offset but a zero putt at the 17th, being off the green a the hole. His was not the lowest putts of the day as the ladies’ winner of the putting contest went to Helen Jones, one better with 25 putts for the round. On the back nine, Helen needed only one putt at 7 of the 9 holes. Keith might ask for a few tips.

A reminder to players of several events in the near future. Next Sunday, 16 July, Stanthorpe is hosting the Zone 1 championships. The event is an open day for all AGU members, but some of the events are closed for Zone 1 members, those from Stanthorpe, Texas, Inglewood and Warwick. The time sheet is at the club and play starts at 9.30 on Sunday.

Further down the calender, on Sunday 27 August, Stanthorpe is hosting a Hellow Yellow Charity Golf Day, a three ball ambrose event which is open to all players, members and social. The day is in favour of the Stanthorpe Cancer Support Group. There are some interesting side events included, some of which will feature in club reports. For the time being, get a team of three players arranged and nominate at the club. Players who require carts are urged to make early booking as there are not a lot to go round.

Apart from that, next Saturday 15 July, the event is a single stableford and sponsored by our Greenkeeper, Bill Pyne. Heard a whisper that Bill is suffering from a flu ailment so we wish him a quick recovery.
