Stanthorpe Golf Club held it’s Open Carnival on the weekend of October 28 and 29. 4BBB was on the card for Saturday with single stroke for men and stableford for ladies on Sunday. A good field of local players and visitors turned out on both days. In all, some sixteen clubs were represented with players for the weekend, the furtherest being Calliope Golf Club. The rain just prior to the weekend refreshed the course nicely and thanks to our green keeper and a few volunteers, the course was in as good a shape as possible.

The single events held on the Sunday resulted in the club’s Open champions being named. For the men’s single stroke event, winner was John Morpuss from Inglewood G.C. with a score of 67. Runner up went to local player, Mick O’Brien with 68 after a count back. After the top players were determined, grade winners were in ‘A’ grade, gross to Kris McClennan (Warwick) nett to Andy Burgess, ‘B’ grade gross to Richard Reardon and nett to Nino Capuzzo (Goobungee) and ‘C’ grade gross to Peter Patti and nett to Viv Thouard. Of particular note to play on the day was the recording of three eagles scored. Nino Capuzzo managed an eagle at hole 11, Tim Hoffmann the same at hole 4 and Kris McLennan doing the same at hole 13.

The ladies played a single stableford event and the best score of 37 points was returned by Jennifer Sparkes and Margie Locke. The count back was in favour of Jennifer with Margie settling for runner up. Divisional winners for the ladies were Pauline McGinn (Pittsworth) in Div 1, Laraine Gurnett (Gailes) for Div 2 and Tracy Smith (Pittsworth) in Div 3. Also, congratulations to Neta Thouard for winning the vets division.

Saturday’s 4BBB event attracted a field of 66 players and some good scores were returned with the best score on the day being from Rod Paye and Mark Richards with 48 points. Runner up team was Ken Rossington and Raymond Adams who were not too far behind on 46 points. Mixed team winners was the team of Shane and Tracy Smith from Pittsworth who also returned 46 points and they were followed by Laraine Gurnett and Rusty Stewart with 43 points on a countback.

Plenty of minor prizes for the Saturday also with NTPs and pro-pins on offer and special mention for Lisa Stuart who blocked out the rest of the field by claiming all three of the ladies’ pin shots.

As well as individual score winners, there were also pin shot, approach and accuracy prizes on offer and all winners of these events are congratulated.

Two days of golf at the club for the Open weekend was very successful and mention must be made of the sponsors and volunteers who helped in making the weekend so successful. Special mention for Maddies’ Gift Gallery who had been a long standing sponsor not only of the club’s Open carnival, but a great supporter of the golf club generally. Maddie has decided to settle back and concentrate on family now but the club has appreciated the involvement over many years and wish her the best for the future.

On a local golf matter, competition next Saturday 4 November is the monthly medal competition sponsored by Poole’s Produce. As well, the day is also the Medal of Medallists final with all medal winners over the last 12 months eligible for the title honour. The men’s event is play for the Roy Carnell Memorial sponsored by the Carnell family and the ladies’ play is sponsored by Tom and Trish Fittock. The time sheet is available at the club website so book your time on-line.
