Plenty of golf for members of the Stanthorpe Golf Club last weekend with normal club competition on Saturday followed by the men’s and ladies’ foursomes championships on Sunday. Saturday 12 August competition was a single stableford sponsored by Lorraine Evans and Ian Pickering and we thank them for them putting on the prizes for the day.
Men’s winner was Lyle Bryant with a score of 37 for the round, one point ahead of the nearest chasers. Key to his win on the day was his ability to stay out of the water hole at 15 and successfully putting from off the green which he did with great effect on the day. With a handful of players on 36 points, the count back came into play, identifying Max Hunter as runner up.
The ladies’ event was won by Lyn Ludlow and her 35 points was one ahead of Nikki Waterworth who settled for runner up.
Pin shots were claimed by Lyle Bryant at 3 and Matt Waterworth at 12. Amazing, no takers for 17. Ladies’ pins won by Lyn Ludlow at 3, Nikki Waterworth at 12 and Christine Hood at 17. Pro-pins claimed by Jason Clear at 1/10, Eric Ree at 5/14 and Keith Jones at 9/18. The birdies nest at 5 was shared by Dan Folkers and Keith Jones. Men’s run down went 35 points and better and ladies to 33 and better.
Highlight of the day was the success of two players who claimed the Scott Constable challenge for recording 12 points on the last four holes. First it was Alan Kerr who managed the feat and that was followed by Keith Jones doing the same. With the prize being a pair of golf shoes, it was suggested they take one shoe each, or a qualifying play off will ensue in the near future.
Sunday 13 August saw the men’s and ladies foursomes championships being decided. What was lacking in quantity was overshadowed by quality with the players who participated. The event for both men and ladies was sponsored by the golf club.
The team of Lyn Ludlow and Nikki Waterworth proved too successful for the field and claimed the ladies championship. The nett winning team was Helen Jones Margie Locke.
The men’s event needed a playoff for the ‘A’ division with the team of Matt Waterworth and Mick O’Brien claiming the title. Also in the play off were Matt Burgess and Andy Burgess, unlucky for them as they had a lost ball to contend with in the last nine holes of the 27 hole event. ‘B’ division was also close, but Ray Thorn and Terry Roser came out on top to claim the title. Overall best nett went to the team of Brendon Barker and Danny Folkers. More foursomes with the mixed championships later in the year.
Upcoming events include the Hellow Yellow Charity Golf Day on Sunday 27 August, a fund raising day in support of the Stanthorpe Cancer Support Group. Funds raised in this event go directly to the Group and used in the Stanthorpe district. It is a fun day of golf and both golfers and non golfers are welcome to come and participate and support a worthy cause. Contact the Golf Club and register a team.
Next Saturday, 19 August, will be another stableford event sponsored by club members, Nathan Stibbard and Marie Cook. Time sheet for the day is on the board at the club.
