Stanthorpe golfers played a stroke event on Saturday 11 May, the day being the monthly medal as well as the start of the club single championships for both men and ladies. The stroke round for the day was sponsored by The Mobile Golf Shop and we thank Stephen and Donna Bishop for the day.

Prior to the start of play, heavy clouds and a fine drizzle caused some discomfort for some but for the more adventurous who took to the fairways, very little rain until much later in the day with some of the tail-enders being a little damper than they had hoped.

Best score for the men’s event was a nett 71 from Matt Burgess and Tom Page, the count back giving the nod to Matt and Tom settling for the runner up. Best gross score also from the winner Matt Burgess with 74 on the day and putting honours went to David Reeves.

Featuring in the run down were David Reeves and Michael Thompson, both players on nett 72 for the round. Pin shots were claimed by Tom Page at 3, Brendon Barker at 12 and Jason Bacon at 17. Approaches were won by Nathan Stibbard at 1/10, Matt Burgess at 5/14 and Mick O’Brien at 9/18.

The ladies medal was won by Mandy Benussi returning the best nett score of 74 on the day and was two better than runner up Neta Thouard on nett 76. Lisa Stuart featured in the run down and also had the best gross score of 95 on the day. Ladies’ putting honours went to Linda Kelly.

Lorraine Evans collected the pin shot at 12 as well as the approach at 7/16. Filomena Silver had closest approach at 2/11 and Mandy Benussi held the pin shot at 17.

The club championships are played over four rounds and in three handicap divisions for both men and ladies. Some good scores already returned and a couple of favourites may have emerged. Early leaders for the men are Matt Burgess in A grade, Tom Page and Len Leigh in B grade and Rod Paye in C grade. Ladies’ front runners are Lisa Stuart in A div, Mandy Benussi in B div and Linda Kelly in C div. Only the first round however and very slight lead for all at this stage.

Next Saturday, May 18, is the second round of championships and tee off time from 11.00 am. Another stroke round and the day sponsored by David and Lisa Stuart. This round is again self nominated and the final two rounds will be seeded. Book online at the club site.
