Saturday 25th and Sunday the 26th of October saw big fields of golfers from as far away as Boyne Island, Emu Park, Redcliffe, Wantima, Beerwah and Windaroo Lakes as well as golfers from all the local courses from Toowoomba to Tenterfield compete in the Stanthorpe Open. This is one of the main events on the local golfing calendar and due to the efforts put in by the local members and our fantastic greenkeeper Bill Pyne the course was in excellent condition which we were able to showcase to all of our visitors.

Major sponsors for the weekend were City Golf Club, Middle Ridge Golf Club and Tenterfield Golf Club with support from Luxury Home Living and the Ballandean Pub, and we would like to thank all of our sponsors for their generous support.

Saturday’s event was a mixed and a non-mixed 4 Ball Best Ball stableford.

The mixed competition was won by local pairing of Bill Burns and Sandra Ellis on a countback from Lyndon and Pauline McGinn from City Golf Club on 43 stableford points.

The non-mixed competition was won by local lads Brendon Barker and Jason Bacon who combined well to come in with an amazing 49 points.

In second place with an also excellent score of 48 points was Karl Braund and Bruce Green.

Ladies pin shots were won by Neta Thouard on 12 and Janelle Sullivan (Windaroo Lakes GC) on 17.

Lisa Stuart had some great approaches winning on 2/11 and 7/16.

Sunday saw a very full field playing in the men’s Single Stroke event and the ladies Stableford event.

We also had the company of Troy Alsford, the Warwick Club Professional who enjoyed his day and came in with a great score. The play was pretty slow as the course was at capacity and in hot and windy conditions players patience was tested but, in the end, everyone got through the day, and some great scores were returned. The men’s overall gross winner was Kris McLennan (Warwick GC) with an excellent score of 71 (1 under par) off the stick.

Overall nett winner was Mark Hendry with a very good 67 nett.

A grade gross winner was Shaun Campbell (Warwick GC) with 74 on a countback from

Heath Collins (Wantima GC). A grade nett was Andrew King (Oakey GC) with a 70 nett. B grade gross was won by John Taylor (City GC) with a score of 82.

B grade nett was Chook Hendry with a 73 nett.

C grade gross went to Bruce Green with a score of 90 and C grade nett went to young gun

Kaine Doorley with a 69 nett.

Men’s pin shots went to Santo Cavallaro on 3, Jim Roach (Wantima GC) on 12 and Nathan Stibbard with a fantastic shot on 17. Approach shots were won by Brendon Barker (1/10), David Gianini (Tenterfield GC) on 12 and Andrew King (Oakey GC) who put his second shot in the hole for an amazing eagle on 9/18. Michael Thompson picked up the accuracy drive on 5/14.

A strong field of ladies competed in the Open Stableford event.

Division 1 was won by Pauline McGinn (City GC) and runner up was local Racheal Hendry. Division 2 winner was Mandy Benussi, and runner up was Lynette Ludlow.

Division 3 was won by Deb Joyce with Trish Fittock taking out the runner up spot.

Ladies pin shots were won by Janelle on 12 and Lisa Stuart on 17. Lisa had a good day by also winning the approach shots on 2/11 and 7/16. Deb Joyce picked up the 4th shot (Div 3) and Pauline McGinn picked up the second shot on 16 in Division 1. Andrea Fearby (Texas GC) collected the accuracy drive on 5/14.

Congratulations to all our winners and to everyone who took part in the weekend’s events. Thanks also to all the volunteers who helped to make the Open Carnival such a successful event.

Next weekend is Ladies and Men’s Monthly Medal and the Medal of Medallists for those who previously won a medal this year.
