Oh dear … the Captain, My Captain, is away for a few weeks and writing this blog column has fallen to me, the Vice Captain. Vice by name and vice by nature. I think we shall begin with reference to that Western culture forming literature of ‘Peanuts’ and Snoopy trying to begin his story: ‘It was a dark and stormy night. Suddenly a [golf] shot rang out. A golf buggy appeared on the horizon.’ Well, we can say that it was dark and stormy weather on the day (see photo). However, the storms went around us, and it only started to rain when we had finished the day’s play.

And what an extraordinary day’s play it was. There was a special guest appearance from another newspaper cartoon – ‘Snake’. Snake is here pictured approaching the 9th, Green. And really its ‘hats off’ to Snake because even though he has a considerable handicap, no legs and no arms – yet he is still there on the golf course competing for a place. It may be appropriate for the Writer to actually mention what actually did happen on Saturday’s Golf Competition!

Congratulations to the Ladies who played for the annual ‘Medal of Medals’ Competition (the competition playoff of the previous twelve-Monthly Medal winners). This was sponsored by our very own and loved Tom and Trish Fittock. Thank you to Tom and Trish and congratulations to the Winner – Neta Thouard, who was also the Monthly Medal Winner, and this is sponsored by Poole’s Produce. Thank you to Poole’s Produce. The Runner Up was Nikki Waterworth followed by Deb Joyce and Lisa Stuart. Hole prizes went to Filomena Silver, Lisa Stuart (x2) and Nikki Waterworth. Best Gross score on the day went to Lisa Stuart. And the best putting was a draw shared by Lisa Stuart and Neta Thouard using her new very flash and effective Putter – thanks to Viv Thouard. The Ladies ‘Encouragement Award’ for the day went to Linda Kelly.

Congratulations to the Men who also played for the Medal of Medals and the November Monthly Medal Competition. The generous Sponsor for the Men was Poole’s Produce, and we thank them kindly. The Medal of Medals also wins the prestigious Roy Carnell Trophy. And we thank the Carnell family for their support of this competition. A big congratulations to Jarrod Irwin with a very impressive score of nett 67. So, Jarrod wins the Medal of Medals and the Monthly Medal and has his name engraved on the perpetual Roy Carnell trophy.

But there is more … Tod Beckett gives a special ‘liquid’ prize to the men’s and women’s Monthly Medal winners. Thanks Todd.

Congratulation too to Brendon Barker for Runner Up and for winning the best Gross score. Run Downs went to Tod Beckett, Robert Reeves, Phill Mihulka, Jason Bacon, Bruce Green and Barry Jones. Hole and pin prizes went to Matt Waterworth, Jason Bacon, Jarrod Irwin, Brendon Barker and Mark Richards. There was some debate as to whether Mark Richards or ‘Snake’ should win the ‘NAGA’ award for being … first at the wrong end of the field. Upon consideration the Vice Captain awarded it to Mark Richards. The Putting Competition was won by man of the moment Jarrod Irwin, proving the golfing adage - ‘drive for show, putt for dough!’
