Stanthorpe Open

The Stanthorpe Open weekend attracted good fields, a total of 165 competitors over two days of golf. The major event, a single stroke for men, resulted in a win to Brendan Barker who returned the best score of 76 gross on the day. Best nett for the day was returned by Barry Hughes, also a local member, with a nett 68 on the card. Both players used their local course knowledge to good effect for the day.

With the major winners accounted for, Grade winners went to David Reeves in ‘A’ grade, Jim Grassick (City GC) in ‘B’ grade and Ivan Juriss in ‘C’ grade. Nett winners were Casey Leotta ‘A’ grade, Lyle Bryant ‘B’ grade and Gordon Fletcher (Tenterfield GC) ‘C’ grade.

The ladies played a stableford event with the overall winner being Carmel Owen (Inglewood GC) with a good score of 39 points. Divisional winners were Lyn Ludlow (38pts) in Div 1, Margie Locke (37 pts) in Div 2 and Shaneen McLellan (33pts) in Div 3. Runners up in divisions were Racheal Hendry, Debra Armstrong (Millmerran GC) and Yvonne Hall (Caboolture GC).

Saturday’s 4BBB medley stableford event winners were Stan Stewart and Les Ison with a very good score of 47 points, four points better than the field. With three teams on 43 points, the countback gave second place to the team of James Haining (Kooralbyn Valley) and William Lathrope.

Mixed team winners were Kay Webb and Bill Pyne on 47 points and runner up to Ian Harvey and Madeline Jarman on 42 points.

The club would like to acknowledge the sponsors of the carnival. Maddies Gift Gallery has continued its long association with the club, paricularly the Open event. Travis Burton was on hand after competing on the day and offered a few words and presented the major prizes to the winners. City Golf Club sponsor the Open Day in many of the smaller clubs in the Darling Downs district, including Stanthorpe, and thanks to Danny Carroll and others from City GC for making the trip to play on the day, and to Jim Grassick for his speech on behalf of Danny and City GC. Also to Tenterfield GC for their part in sponsoring the Open at Stanthorpe.

Last but not least, is appreciation to the volunteers, local members who helped for the day in any capacity, working at the bar was Sinbad, on the BBQ was Sandra – great effort. Also to those who helped out by getting the course ready, preparing cards and collating the same, sending out the field and organising the prizes. We can’t forget the greenkeeper, Bill Pyne, who was able to present an excellent course considering the extreme shortage of water of late.

Attention is now on next week with competition being a single stroke for the November monthly medal and putting competition, Poole’s Produce Golf Day, sponsored by Howard and Adele Poole. This will be the first medal day for the new season. In conjunction is the Medal of Medallists, the men playing for the Roy Carnell trophy and the ladies event sponsored by Tom & Trish Fittock. This event will be contested by the individual winners of medal events over the last twelve months. Tee off from 11.30 am and the time sheet is on the board.
