Golf at Stanthorpe last Saturday was in doubt after some heavy falls of rain during the week. The morning was overcast and showers were ongoing. A fair number of intending players decided to stay indoors in the dry, however there were sufficient numbers who decided to take to the fairways and play the stroke event for the Apple & Grape Cups kindly sponsored by Spano’s Supa IGA Stanthorpe and the club thanks them for the day.

The men’s event included both early morning and afternoon tee off times and to say that there was an advantage in either times would be incorrect with both sessions experiencing showery conditions. Greg Fraser coped best on the wet day and his nett 70 was good enough to win the day. Greg’s front nine was steady but an excellent back nine of three over par gave him the edge.

Another good round from Nathan Stibbard enabled him to secure runner up with a nett 71, one shot behind the leader. The run down went to nett 73 and a ball to Jacob Steele with nett 72 and to Ivan Juriss with nett 73.

Only two pin shots were on offer, combined 3/12 and 17. Matt Waterworth had the closest at 3/12 to collect this pin, no one managed to hold the green at 17 and it was unclaimed. There were no pro-pins on offer.

A small number of ladies also headed out on the fairways for their event but the rain increased in intensity so the decision was made after nine holes to postpone the event to Wednesday 2 March.

There is a hope for better weather for the next Apple & Grape Festival event which is on this Friday 4 March, a 2 ball ambrose with the event open to all golfers, both handicapped and non-handicapped. The day will be sponsored by Crisp’s Coaches and already quite a few names on the time sheet. Shot gun start at 9.00am with registration by 8.30 am.

A similar fate for Sporters Sunday competition with fairly heavy and consistent rain keping all players off the course, no golf at all.

There is no golf competition next Saturday, all will be in town for the Apple & Grape Festival. The following weekend is the March monthly medal and putting competition sponsored by Beckett’s Pest Control. Time sheet is on the board at the club.
