Stanthorpe Golf Club held a very successful Open carnival last weekend which involved some 160 players who teed off over two days of events. Along with local Stanthorpe members, golfers representing 18 golf clubs from near and far participated through the carnival. A great turn out over two days considering we are still playing under fairly restrictive and demanding protocols.

Not only are the players and visitors thanked, but also the sponsors who have supported the two day event. Once again, Maddies Gift Gallery of Stanthorpe has continued to be a major sponsor of local golf as has City Golf Club and Tenterfield Golf Club. Sponsorship and support was also received from Sutton’s Juice Factory, St Joseph’ school and Amadio Wines. Local members also helped out with donations and time given to run the carnival, assist in preparing the course and handling the bar and catering facility.

Special thanks to greenkeeper, Bill Pyne, and his helpers for presenting the course in such great shape.

Saturday’s 4BBB stableford was marred by some heavy showers during the afternoon which caused some players to seek shelter in the club house. The majority persisted and were rewarded with some fine weather for the rest of the afternoon.

Winner of the medley event was of Wil Lathrope (Blackwater G.C.) who teamed with Errol Thompson (Calliope G.C.) with a point total of 45. The local pairing of Barry Jones and Matt Burgess were two points back for runner up. The mixed pairings gave a win to Neta Thouard and James Haining (Kooralbyn Valley G.C.) with a score of 43 points.

On Sunday, men played a single stroke and the ladies played a stableford. The course was a little damp from the rain the previous day and the greens slightly slow and a bit tricky for the visitors.

Men’s overall winner was Matt Waterworth with 73 for the round. Matt’s front nine was fair but he stormed home on the back nine for 33 which included four birdies. Best nett score for the day was from Rob Reeves with 69 after he recorded 81 for the round.

Major grade prizes went to James Haining with 74 for A grade, Keith Jones with 83 for B grade and Wil Lathrope with 93 for C grade.

The ladies stableford was won by Nikki Waterworth (not to be outplayed by Matt) with a stableford score of 34 points. One point further back on 33 was Racheal Hendry who claimed runner up.

Grade winners for the ladies went to Janet Kuhle (Gatton G.C.) with 31 points for Div 1, Jennifer Sparkes with 31 points for Div 2 and Fiona Kelly with 30 points for Div 3.

Thanks to the sponsors of the carnival, prizes were able to be awarded for runners up and run down scores for all grades and divisions.

Next weekend we are back to usual Saturday golf with the playing of the end of month medley fourball, this time an Irish medley stableford. Tee off time will be 11.45am for the afternoon session and players are requested to register 20 minutes prior to allow the starter a reasonable time to set starting tee positions.

Sponsor for the day is club member, Max Hunter. As we all know, Max was involved in a car accident not that long ago and spent some time in hospital. Great to see him back home and we wish him a quick and successful recovery and hope to see him back on the course.
