The Stanthorpe Golf Club held their Open event last weekend, a full field for both Saturday and Sunday which included local players and visitors on the course. As well as nearby clubs of Tenterfield, Texas, Inglewood, Warwick and Allora, players came from our sponsoring club, City Golf Club and the API golfers who have been visiting for a number of years for the event.

The Club thanks their sponsors for the event, particularly Maddies Gift Gallery who have now been sponsoring golf in Stanthorpe over a long period, City Golf Club who sponsor golf throughout the Darling Downs region and Tenterfield Golf Club, although players from Tenterfield were restricted from attending unless on this side of the border. The Rotary Club of the Granite Belt are also thanked for being on hand both days of the carnival and doing a great job of manning the BBQ and keeping the burgers on the ready.

Saturday’s event was a medley 4BBB stableford won by the team of Margie Locke and Ivan Juriss with a score of 44 points. Runner up was the team of Jim and Jenny Grassick from City Golf with 41 points. Men’s winners was the team of Rod Werner and Kev Rowling who also returned 44 points followed by John Slack and Rino Piovesan, runner up with 42 points. Pin shots were won by David Gianini, Geoff Fearby, Matt Waterworth, Lisa Stuart, and Jenny Grassick. Peo-pins went to Mark McCosker, Errol Thompson and David Gianini and Linda Kelly picked up the ladies pin at 3

Saturday’s highlight was the impending storm late in the day with the field still out on the course. When the storm finally started, the field was seen scurrying from the course to shelter. Although all returned safely, there were not many dry bodies to be seen.

Sunday’s event was much better with no storm likely. The men’s event was a stroke round with the overall gross winner being Scott Constable on 71 and nett winner Kev Rowling on nett 69. Grade gross winners were David Burgess in A grade, Gary Maguire in B grade and Angelo Maugeri in C grade. Nett winners were John Morpuss (Inglewood) in A grade, Richard Reardon in B grade and Viv Thouard in C grade.

The ladies played a stableford with overall winner being Racheal Hendry with 30 points. Helen Jones was runner up on 29 points. In Div 1, Lisa Stuart was first with Nikki Waterworth runner up, Div 2 went to Margie Locke with Kay Webb runner up and in C grade, Fiona Kelly first with Jenny Grassick from City in as runner up.

Pin shots were claimed by Scott Constable, Blue Thompson, Jim Grassick, Racheal Hendry, Margie Locke and Nikki Waterworth. Men’s approaches went to Mark Hendry, John Morpuss and Norm Mitchell. Ladies’ approached claimed ny Carmel Owen, Lyn Ludlow and Mei Bell.

The accuracy drives at the 1/10 hole were won by Lyle Bryant and ladies’ winner being Annelle Batterham.

The presentation at the end of the day was followed by a multi draw raffle and thanks to Shaneen and Eric McLellan for arranging this. Some great prizes were on offer with appreciation from the many business houses in Stanthorpe and around the Granite Belt for their contribution. In all, the supporters include Lilly’s Cafe, Repco, J luxi Beauty, Lirah Vinegar, Kent Saddlery,Slaps Cafe, Mitre 10, Cherry Lane Nursery, Bi-Rite Electrical, Mansara Salon, Stanthorpe Furniture Emporium, MWF Plumbing, Stannum Hait, Print & Copy, Brinx Deli and Cafe, The Electic Pallet, Little Larder, Masquarade Hair, Cuts & Curls Salon, Indigo hair, Boss Meats, Rumbalara Estate Wines, Sam’s Fruit Shop, Sutton’s Juice & Cafe, Heritage Estate Wines, Country Lane, Granite Ridge Wine, Em’s Cafe, Tobin Wines, Vincenzo’s, Mick’s Four Seasons Nursey, ‘Landy’s’ Top Pub, and Granite Belt Cleaning and Hospitality.

Back to normal next weekend with Saturday’s competition being an individual stableford which will be sponsored by club member, Michael Lane. There is an early morning tee off time and the afternoon session starts at 11.30 am. The time sheet is on the board at the clubhouse.
