Two days of golf last weekend with the usual Saturday comp followed by the club’s foursomes championships on Sunday.

The Saturday stroke event was played for the Newley family trophy, the Laurie Newley Memorial Trophy. Laurie Newley was a keen golfer, a club member and looked after the course and greens at the club.

The men’s division was won by Matt Burgess with a nett 72. With two players on nett 74, the countback went in favour of David Burgess over Max Hunter. The final result was a son getting the better of the father in the nett event but in David’s favour, he still managed to beat Matt in the gross event, 79 to 80.

The ladies division was a win to Lisa Stuart, again with a very consistent round of golf to return a nett 68. Nikki Waterworth collected the runner up prize with a nett 72.

Men’s pin shots were claimed by David Burgess at 3, Mick O’Brien at 12 and Chris Binge at 17, Ladies’ pins went to Marie Cook at 12 and Kay Webb at 17. Pro-pins won by David Gianini at 1/10, Chris Binge at 5/14 and Rob Reeves at 9/18. Birdies nest was unclaimed.

Sunday’s foursomes championships, for both men and ladies, attracted some very competitive teams, although there were a few favourites in the field.

The men’s ‘A’ division resulted in a win to the team of Nathan Stibbard and Jason Hatton with a five shot lead on the field, a score of 114. ‘B’ grade winners were Richard Reardon and Keith Jones with a score of 129. Best nett went to Mick O’Brien and Matt Waterworth after a three way countback was needed to find a winner.

The ladies foursomes resulted in Racheal Hendry and Marie Cook taking first place with a score of 139, ten better than the field. Best nett from this division went to Margie Locke and Mei Bell with nett 110.

Although the event was a gross stroke event, nett score were fairly close with only 10 shots between first and last in both men’s and ladies’ divisions.

The mixed foursomes are due early next month, so players should start locating a partner for this event.

Next Saturday is the Peter Howard Memorial Day and the event is Canadian foursomes. Being the end of month, play will commence with a shot gun start at 12.00 noon. The time shet is on the board.
