Club golfers turned out for the club championships last weekend with rounds 1 and 2 being played over the two days so stroke rounds for both days.

Saturday’s stroke event resulted in wins to Mick O’Brien in the men’s section and Lynette Ludlow for the ladies. O’Brien’s win came after a countback involving Bruce Green and Mark Hendry, all with the same score, nett 71. Scott Constable had the best gross score of 73 and Mick O’Brien had least putts, 23 for the day.

The ladies’ event was won by Lynette Ludlow who returned a nett 73 giving second place to Lorraine Evans on nett 75 c/b. Marie Cook had the best gross score of 93 and Annelle Batterham collected the putting prize with 25 putts.

Appreciation to Mark and Racheal Hendry for sponsoring the day’s event and to Mark for presenting the prizes.

Sunday’ single event was sponsored by Ron and Annelle Batterham and we also thank them for presenting the prizes at the presentation.

Greg Fraser had the best for the day, almost the last group in, and his nett 69 was two better than the field. After a lengthy countback, David Burgess was awarded the runner up prize. The ladies’ event was another win to Lisa Stuart with nett 73 ahead of runner up, Neta Thouard on nett 76.

For the championships, most players would have been attempting to put themselves into a good position for the final two rounds. They say you can’t win the championship in the first two rounds but you can lose it, as some managed to do, making it difficult to catch up in the final two rounds.

‘A’ grade looks to be a race between Scott Constable and David Burgess who have managed to distance themselves from the rest. ‘B’ grade is being led by Kev Rowling and Tom Fittock but their lead might be chased down if they slip up. ‘C’ grade looks to a race between Bruce Green and Lyle Bryant but Cal Smith is just on the outside with a real chance. All will be decided over the next two rounds.

The ladies have thrown up three names in the top division, with Marie Cook, Nikki Waterworth and Lisa Stuart all making a claim. In the other division, Annelle Batterham and Trish Fittock look likely to be fighting out for top spot.

The final two rounds of championships will be held next weekend and a seeded draw with tee times has been posted at the club. Saturday’s event will be sponsored by Chris Fittock and Sunday’s final round is sponsored by Alan Kerr and Dale Minchenton. Players are requested to be on time for their starting time.
