After several weeks away from the course, the Waterworths returned refreshed and claimed double victories last weekend with Matt winning the men’s single stableford, Nikki winning the ladies stableford on Saturday, then both combining to win the mixed foursomes championships on Sunday. Interesting that the runners up on Saturday were also runners up on Sunday.

Matt returned a score of 40 points in the stableford, equal to Ron Batterham’s 40 points recorded earlier. Matt took the advantage for the countback after birdies at holes 11, 12 and 13 resulted in 21 points for the back nine which was one better than Ron’s 20 points for the same nine. Matt secured the win with Ron settling for runner up.

Ron Batterham was the first score recorded on the day and was the club house leader for the duration of the day. Matt was the last card returned and was the one that tipped Ron out of the lead.

The day was sponsored by Todd Wilshire of Wilshire and Co and the club thanks them for their sponsorship and to Mark McCosker who represented them at the presentation and spoke on Todd’s behalf.

Nikki Waterworth had a three point advantage on the ladies’ field recording 38 points for the round. Her score could have been even better except for two dropped holes on the back nine. Runner up went to ever consistent Lorraine Evans after she returned a score of 35 points for the round.

In the run down for each event, prizes were awarded to Andrew Burgess (38), Ian Harvey (38) and Jason Bacon (38) and to Lyn Ludlow (34) for the ladies.

Sunday’s mixed foursomes resulted in the Waterworths combining in the alternate shot format and they were the most consistent team on the day. Their first nine was completed in 39 strokes, their second in 41 and the final nine back win 39 strokes for a total of 119 and ensured they put their names on the shield. Brendon Barker and Sandra Ellis were close behind with 122 for their round and to claim runner up. They did hold a one shot lead after the first 18, but a few dropped holes on the final nine was very telling.

The mixed foursomes championships gross event was sponsored by the golf club and the nett event was sponsored by Ron and Annelle Batterham, both are thanked for their generosity in these events.

The nett event for the foursomes was won by the team of Darryl Boekholt and Fiona Kelly with a score of 105. Runner up was claimed by the team of Ron Batterham and Lorraine Evans with a nett score of 110, Runner up on Saturday, unners up on Sunday. Congratulations to the winners and to all the teams that competed in this difficult form of play.

Members should be aware that the club Open is quickly approaching and the time sheets are all but complete, only a couple of spots left. A waiting list is already in operation and may be the only chance to join the field, so if not already nominated, get in quick.

Next Saturday is an individual stableford and sponsored by Dep’s Beautiful Nails of Stanthorpe. The time sheet is on the board and is the last event before the club’s open weekend.
