More mature Golfers will remember the song by Brook Benton, ‘A Rainy Night in Georgia’, well it was a rainy night in Stanthorpe right through to the morning. The early starters were blessed with playing in heavy, soaking rain. The more enlightened Golfers who started at a civilised hour were blessed with sunshine and refreshing breezes. ‘Such is the Life of the Everyday … Golfer’ (song by Glen Campbell). Yours truly had the pleasure of playing with Max Smith, a retired Stanthorpe Postman – And Max is still ‘delivering’, drive after drive down the middle of the fairway (mostly). Also, another playing partner was Chris Binge who has covered many Stanthorpe floors with carpet but is ‘covering’ the Golf Course with his ‘cover drives’ (excuse the mixed metaphor, we are all watching the Ashes). Finally, our group of six consisted of three of the young guns of golf: Jack Parker, Kaine Doorley and Riley Surch. I’d like to take the opportunity to commend these three young men on their sportsmanship and gentlemanly behaviour, particularly when some of their golf shots were ... ‘character forming.’ It was a pleasure to play a round with them. And congratulations to Jack and Riley who graduated from year 12 this week.

Saturday’s Golf Competition was doubly special because we had the honour of two separate sponsors for the day. The Peirce Family Trophy was on offer. The best part was having Bob Peirce present, aged 92, to make the presentation of the Trophy. Bob’s father sowed the first bent greens in 1935. The Stanthorpe Golf Course is noted for the high quality of its greens, and the reason goes back to the Peirce Family. Along with Bob and Elanne was their son David and wife Lisa and grandchildren Georgie and Kerra. Bob gave a very interesting address of the family history and involvement in the Stanthorpe Golf Club. It was an absolute delight to see this beautiful family playing along with the Competition. The Peirce Competition has a particular feature. The original intention was to encourage women in golf so the trophy goes to mixed, men’s and women’s teams. Congratulations to Ray Thorn and Lisa Stuart. The prizes were Christmas Hams – what every woman wants at this time of year. Runners Up were Linda Kelly and Aaron Simmers.

The Second reason Saturday’s Golf was so special was because the sponsor of the 4BBB Competition was Favero Motors. Steve Favero was present and awarded very generous prizes to the young gentlemen golfers Kaine Doorley and Jack Parker. Runners Up were from the Morning Madness Members, Tod Beckett and Barry Jones. Well done to all and the Club is very grateful for the generous support of Favero Motors.

Next Saturday, the 29th is a fun golf day sponsored by Jason Bacon and Brendon Barker. This will be a most interesting and challenging day for all. Don’t miss out! The golf fun will be followed by the Club’s Christmas party with catering by Trappo’s Smoked Meats.
